    What a good after-hours message does

    • Say you're closed in the first sentence — it's the first thing an after-hours caller needs to know.
    • Give your hours the way people say them: "Monday to Friday, 9 to 5", not "0900–1700".
    • If callers can have emergencies, put the urgent line first. Clinics should point medical emergencies to the local emergency number.
    • Promise a realistic callback — "the next business day" — and keep it.
