Best AI receptionists for small business (2026): an honest comparison
Organized by what each service is best for, not by a ranking — with every competitor fact taken from the vendor's own site and linked to it.
The short answer
What is the best AI receptionist for a small business?
There is no single best AI receptionist: the right one depends on how many minutes your calls use and whether a person has to answer. From each vendor's own pricing page, as of October 2026: for the cheapest start, Smith.ai's free plan covers 25 calls a month, and paid plans start at $24.95 (Upfirst) and $29 (Dialzara); for the most minutes per dollar, Rosie includes 250 minutes for $49; for unlimited minutes, Goodcall charges by unique callers instead; for a person on every call, Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Ruby and Posh sell live receptionists; and developers can build their own on Vapi or Retell AI. We make Daber AI ($3 to go live for 14 days, then $49 a month for 3.5 hours of calls); it fits businesses whose callers speak several languages, or that want to set it up by chatting with Claude or ChatGPT.
Best for…
Each pick has a one-line reason from the vendor's own published terms. "Daber AI here" says where our product stands in the same category.
The cheapest start
- Smith.ai AI Receptionist — A free plan: 25 calls a month for $0, then $3.00 per extra call. At that volume nothing paid costs less. Compare with Daber AI
- Upfirst — $24.95/mo (30 calls). Free trial: 14 days, no card.
- Dialzara — $29/mo · Lite (60 min). Free trial: 7 days.
Daber AI here: Not Daber AI. Going live costs $3 for the first 14 days (a real number and 30 call minutes), but after that it is $49 a month — more than these plans. With only a handful of calls a month, they cost less.
The most included minutes for the money
- Rosie — $49 for 250 minutes on Professional — $0.196 a minute, the lowest of the entry plans sold by the minute here. No overage fee — going over moves you to the next plan. Compare with Daber AI
Daber AI here: Not Daber AI at the entry plan: $49 Starter includes 210 minutes ($0.233 a minute). Going a little over 250 minutes costs less on Daber AI, because its extra time is $0.23 a minute, billed per second, while Rosie moves you to its next plan.
Unlimited minutes
- Goodcall — Minutes are unlimited; you pay by unique callers instead — 100 a month on Starter for $79 per agent, then $0.50 each. Free trial: 14 days. Compare with Daber AI
Daber AI here: Not Daber AI, which bills by the minute. Past about 339 minutes a month — long calls from a limited number of callers — Goodcall's Starter costs less.
A person on every call
- Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists — Live receptionists billed by the call, from $300 a month for 30 calls. Trial: not published. Compare with Daber AI
- Ruby — Live receptionists billed by the minute, from $250 a month for 50 min. Trial: No free trial; 21-day money-back guarantee for first-time customers. Compare with Daber AI
- Posh — Live receptionists billed by the minute, from $65 a month, with every minute billed ($2.30 a minute on Chïc). Trial: not published.
Daber AI here: Not Daber AI. It has no human receptionists: its AI agent answers, and when a caller needs a person it transfers the call to your own staff.
AI with live people behind it
- Smith.ai AI Receptionist — A US answering company that sells an AI receptionist backed by live agents, billed per call, alongside its live virtual receptionist service. Compare with Daber AI
- Abby Connect — A live virtual receptionist service that also sells an AI receptionist; both draw on one allowance of "Abby minutes". An AI-answered minute counts as half an Abby minute; AI-only plans start at $99/month for 50 Abby minutes (100 AI minutes).
Daber AI here: Not Daber AI: it hands calls to your own team, not to receptionists of its own.
Calls, SMS, chat and a CRM in one plan
- My AI Front Desk — Business-in-a-Box: $99 a month for 200 voice minutes plus chat, SMS, a CRM and automations. $79/month when billed annually. Compare with Daber AI
Daber AI here: Daber AI's agent also answers WhatsApp and website chat on every plan, but it has no CRM of its own; it can send call results to yours through its API and webhooks.
Building it yourself (developers)
- Vapi — A developer platform for building voice AI agents through an API. Usage-based: a per-minute platform fee, plus the speech, language-model and phone-line providers you choose, at their rates.
- Retell AI — A platform for building, testing and deploying AI voice agents that make and answer phone calls. Pay-as-you-go per minute, no contract; the rate depends on the models, voice and add-ons you pick.
Daber AI here: Daber AI has a REST API, webhooks and an MCP server, but it is a finished receptionist with a dashboard, not a toolkit. If you want to choose every model and own the call logic in code, a developer platform gives you more control — and you assemble and pay for the speech, model and phone-line providers yourself.
Callers who speak different languages
- Daber AI (ours) — It answers in the caller's language — English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian and many more — and switches mid-call when the caller does.
Caveat: We make Daber AI, and we haven't compared the other services' language lists, so ask each one about the languages your callers speak — and test with them before you rely on any of these.
Setting it up by chatting with Claude or ChatGPT
- Daber AI (ours) — Paste one link into Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor, sign in and describe your business: the assistant builds the agent, adds your facts as drafts for you to approve, and tests it. Attaching the phone number stays in the dashboard.
Caveat: We make Daber AI and haven't checked whether the other services offer the same; if it matters to you, ask them.

Where Daber AI is not the best pick
Pick something else if one of these is what you need most:
- The cheapest start: Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Upfirst, Dialzara
- The most included minutes for the money: Rosie
- Unlimited minutes: Goodcall
- A person on every call: Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Ruby, Posh
- AI with live people behind it: Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Abby Connect
- Calls, SMS, chat and a CRM in one plan: My AI Front Desk
- Building it yourself (developers): Vapi, Retell AI
How to choose
Start from last month's call log
Write down three numbers: calls, total minutes and how many different people called. Per-minute plans favor short calls, per-call plans favor long ones, and per-caller plans favor a few people who call often — the same business can be cheapest on a different service depending on which it is.
Decide whether a person has to answer
AI receptionists answer, book and transfer; they are not people. If every caller needs human judgment, a live answering service is the right category even at several dollars a minute.
Price your busiest month, not an average one
Going over is where plans differ most: some charge per extra minute or call, one moves you to its next plan, and one sends callers to voicemail when the minutes run out unless auto-recharge is on.
Test with your hardest call
Use the trial or free test on a real question, a noisy line and a caller who changes their mind halfway, and ask whether you can keep your existing number (forwarding or porting) before you switch.
How this comparison was made
Small-business AI receptionists and live answering services that publish their prices, plus two developer platforms for the "build it yourself" case. Each fact comes from the vendor's own pages, linked in its row, and was checked on the date shown; prices were checked October 2026. Prices change often — if a vendor's page now says something else, their page is right and this one is out of date: tell us at hello@daber.ai.
Questions
What is the best AI receptionist for a small business?
It depends on what you need most. As of October 2026: the cheapest start: Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Upfirst or Dialzara; the most included minutes for the money: Rosie; unlimited minutes: Goodcall; a person on every call: Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Ruby or Posh; AI with live people behind it: Smith.ai AI Receptionist or Abby Connect; calls, SMS, chat and a CRM in one plan: My AI Front Desk; building it yourself (developers): Vapi or Retell AI. Daber AI, which we make, fits multilingual callers and setup by chatting with Claude or ChatGPT.
What is the cheapest AI receptionist?
By entry price, Smith.ai's free plan (25 calls a month), then Upfirst at $24.95 a month and Dialzara at $29 a month. By price per included minute, Rosie's $49 plan with 250 minutes is the lowest of the plans sold by the minute. Past a few hundred minutes a month, the overage terms decide it.
Is there an AI receptionist with unlimited minutes?
Goodcall publishes unlimited minutes on its plans and charges by unique callers instead: 100 a month on Starter for $79 per agent, then $0.50 each (as of October 2026). Daber AI bills by the minute.
Should I get an AI receptionist or a live answering service?
They are different categories. Live answering services put a person on every call and cost about $2.30 to $5.00 per minute on their entry plans, while AI receptionists' entry plans cost $24.95 to $150 a month. If every caller needs human judgment, choose a live service; if most calls are questions, bookings and messages, an AI receptionist that transfers the rest to your staff costs far less.
Is Daber AI the best AI receptionist?
We make it, so we won't claim that. It fits businesses whose callers speak several languages or that want to set it up by chatting with Claude or ChatGPT; it costs $3 for 14 days, then $49 a month for 3.5 hours. It is not the cheapest at very low volume, it doesn't offer unlimited minutes, and it has no human receptionists.
Where do these facts come from?
From each vendor's own website, linked in every row, checked in October 2026. We don't use third-party estimates or review sites; when a vendor doesn't publish a figure, the page says so instead of guessing.
