    What is a call queue?

"Your call is important to us": how call queues work, and what to offer instead of hold music.

    The short answer

    What is a call queue?

A call queue is a waiting line for phone calls. When everyone who answers is busy, the phone system holds new callers in order, usually with music or recorded messages, and connects each one to the next person who becomes free. A queue keeps calls from being lost to a busy signal, but every minute on hold is a minute in which the caller may hang up. Many systems also offer a callback instead of holding.

    How it works

A queue sits behind a number or a menu option. Its settings decide who answers, in what order, and what happens when the wait gets too long.

    • Callers enter in order and hear music or messages, sometimes their place in line.
    • Free team members get the next call, by rotation or by who has been idle longest.
    • A maximum wait or queue size sends further calls to overflow: voicemail, another team or another destination.
    • Some queues let callers leave their number and get a callback instead of holding.

    Example

A medical clinic has three receptionists. The phones open at 8:00, and a dozen patients call in the first ten minutes. Most of them wait in the queue; some hang up and try again later, so the morning fills up with repeat calls nobody planned for.

What it means for a small business

A queue only works when someone frees up soon. Daber AI answers calls in parallel, so calls that arrive at the same moment are all answered at once and handled without waiting for a person. When a request does need someone, the agent can bridge a person who is free, or offer a callback: it takes the number and a preferred time window, and the system calls back then, with retries if nobody answers.

    Questions

What is the difference between a call queue and a ring group?

A ring group rings several phones, all at once or in order, and if nobody picks up within the set time the call moves on. A queue holds the caller and waits until someone is free to take the call.

    What is a queue callback?

Instead of holding, the caller leaves their number, or confirms the one they're calling from, and the business calls them back when it's their turn or at a time they choose. They keep their place without staying on the line.
