What is a ring group?
One number, several phones: how ring groups work, and where the calls nobody answers end up.
The short answer
What is a ring group?
A ring group is a set of phones that ring for the same number or menu option, so whoever is free picks up. It can ring all phones at once (simultaneous), one after another in a fixed order (sequential, often called a hunt group), or rotate which phone rings first. If nobody answers within the set time, the call moves to a fallback, such as voicemail, a queue or another number.
Ways a ring group can ring
| Strategy | How it rings | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Simultaneous | Every phone in the group rings at once | Small teams where the fastest answer wins |
| Sequential | One phone at a time, in a fixed order | A main person with backups |
| Rotating | The first phone to ring changes from call to call | Sharing calls, such as leads, evenly |
Example
A real estate office puts its four agents' mobiles in a ring group behind the main number. All four ring at once, and the first to answer takes the call. On a busy weekend morning all four are showing homes, nobody answers, and the call falls through to the group's fallback.
What it means for a small business
The fallback is where small businesses lose calls. Make an AI receptionist the last step: when nobody in the group picks up, the call goes to the agent's number, which answers, handles what it can and takes the caller's details. With Daber AI you then have the call's recording, transcript and summary, and the agent can transfer back to a person or a specific extension when the caller needs one.
Questions
What is the difference between a ring group and a hunt group?
A hunt group usually means a ring group that rings phones one after another, "hunting" for the first free one. Some phone systems use the two names for the same feature, so check which ring strategies yours offers.
How long should a ring group ring before it gives up?
Long enough for someone to reach a phone, short enough that the caller doesn't hang up first. Ring time is usually set in seconds; call your own number and listen to how long it actually feels.
Call the agent now
A real call, not a recording. Exactly what your callers would hear.
Have the agent call me
Leave a number — the agent calls you in under a minute.
