What is call overflow?
The calls that arrive when everyone is already on the phone, and the backup plan that catches them.
The short answer
What is call overflow?
Call overflow is what happens to incoming calls when every person or line that should answer is busy, and the rule that decides where those extra calls go. Instead of a busy signal, endless ringing or voicemail, overflow routing sends them to a backup: another team, a queue, an answering service or an AI receptionist. It matters most at predictable peaks, like Monday mornings or right after an ad runs.
How it works
Overflow routing is a rule in your phone system or carrier settings: a trigger, and a destination for the calls that meet it.
- Every line or person is busy.
- The call has rung a set number of times with no answer.
- The queue is full, or callers have waited longer than a set time.
- Then the call goes to the backup you chose, instead of ringing out or reaching voicemail.
Example
A restaurant's two hosts answer the phone during dinner. On a Friday at 7 p.m., a third call comes in while both are already on the line. Overflow sends it to an AI receptionist, which answers the question about parking, takes the reservation request and texts the caller a confirmation that it was received.
What it means for a small business
If one or two people answer your phone, every call that arrives while they're busy is overflow. Daber AI answers calls in parallel, so calls that arrive at the same moment are all answered at once and no queue builds up. Set your phone system or carrier to send calls to the agent when every line is busy, or after the number of rings you choose. The agent handles routine requests itself and returns the rest to your team, by bridging a person who is free or by taking a callback request.
Questions
Is call overflow the same as a call queue?
No. A queue holds callers until someone is free. Overflow is the rule for what happens when everyone is busy, and a queue is one possible answer. Another is sending the call to someone, or something, that can answer it now.
Does a small business need overflow routing?
If you have no rule, overflow calls go to voicemail or ring out, and some callers try a competitor instead. The simplest rule is conditional forwarding on busy or no answer to a backup that can take the call.
