    Call flow

What a call flow is, what one looks like for a small business, and how an AI agent follows it.

    The short answer

    What is a call flow?

A call flow is the planned path a phone call follows from the moment it is answered to the moment it ends: the greeting, the questions asked, the branches for each kind of caller, and where each branch ends up, such as a booking, a message or a transfer to a person. It is usually drawn as a diagram. Phone menus, call center scripts and AI phone agents are all built on call flows.

Example: a small clinic's call flow

    1. 1Greeting: the clinic's name, and that the caller is speaking with an AI agent.
    2. 2Ask what the call is about.
    3. 3New appointment: ask for the name and preferred time, check the calendar, book, send an SMS confirmation.
    4. 4Change or cancel: find the existing appointment, move or cancel it, confirm.
    5. 5Question about prices, hours or insurance: answer from the knowledge base, then ask if there's anything else.
    6. 6Anything urgent or unclear: transfer to the front desk, or take a message if nobody answers.

How an AI agent follows a call flow

In Daber AI you paste your existing call script and get a call flow you can run: each step becomes a node, each "if the caller says X" becomes a branch, and lines you mark as verbatim are said word for word. The engine decides which branch comes next, not the model, so the agent can't improvise its way off the script. When a caller asks a side question, the agent answers from the knowledge base and returns to the same step. You can edit the flow on a canvas, and every save is a version you can roll back to.

What it means for a small business

Start with the three or four reasons people call you most, and give each one a clear ending: booked, answered, message taken or transferred. A short flow that covers most calls beats a big one nobody can check. Read the call summaries after the first week to see which branch is missing.

    Questions

What's the difference between a call flow and a call script?

A script is what to say; a call flow is the map of where the call can go and what decides each turn. Scripts are usually written as a document, flows as a diagram. An AI agent needs the flow, and Daber AI can build it from your script.

Do I need a call flow for an AI receptionist?

Not always. An agent can work from instructions and a knowledge base alone. A call flow helps when the order of questions or the exact wording matters, such as intake, qualification or anything you'd give a new employee as a script.
